Organic & Inorganic

This project seeks to develop a concept - organic and inorganic - through the exploration of different materials. It has three stages: Heart Mine, Scales and, Coacervates, which are explained below.

HEART MINE

Heart Mine is the result of an exploration process realized from the comprehension of the organic at the disposal of life, and the inorganic as that condemned to death. A mine composed of 110 units is proposed to contrast these two concepts. This way, the value of a heart, as a symbol of life in relation to the value of gold, is questioned. Likewise, a parallel is made between the warm, mobile and light material of the hearts, as opposed to the rigid, cold and heavy appearance of the metal.

The appearance of metal is imitated with a very different material: hot silicone. This way, despite their metallic appearance, very light and elastic pieces are created. Likewise, each of the hearts was made by hand with a hot silicone gun.

COACERVATES

The most recent theory of the origin of life affirms that there is an intermediate state between the organic and the inorganic called coacervate, generated by the accumulation of carbon dioxide, methane, ammonia, water vapor, hydrogen and ultraviolet rays, which then give rise to proteins, and finally to DNA.

This spontaneous and unpredictable union is a coincidence within the multiple possibilities by which these elements could have come together. It shows us that life is a wonderful game of chance.

In that sense, I used iron filings subjected to a magnetic field to show how an inorganic material can agglomerate in a totally random way, creating a movement of an animated body.

SCALES

This experiment explores the idea that the inorganic rules the organic. First, life potency is derived from inanimate materials. Biological organisms are made in their most minimal expression of inorganic elements. In addition, the inorganic realm has the ability to prevent life from happening. On the other hand, the inorganic is broader than the organic in terms of time and space, meaning that it regenerates in longer cycles and occupies a greater portion of the universe.

To materialize the previous idea, condoms filled with plants were used, since the former enhance or limit the life of the organic body. Likewise, the plastic will decompose much later than the organic material. And finally, this ultime is contained inside the condom, demonstrating its spatial subordination.
